Winter Harbin Shopping

Ever since the markets started to pop up all over the world thousands of years ago, they all had to contend with supply and demand, shortages and surpluses, unequal information, transportation costs and external environmental factors. One of those environmental factors in NE China is winter. The weather can drop to -40C and that means all meat even if it is fresh is instantly frozen, ice cream is thrown on a blanket outside and the oranges are brought indoors next to the heaters. It also means where coal is still the main source of heat in older neighborhoods, that the snow only stays white for a day or two until burned coal is dumped from the furnaces to the front step doubling as anti-slip gravel. So on an evening with fresh snow, hitting the market can be a nice stroll back in time. bQ
